Your business card is crap

http://www.smartdogdigital.com/blog/your-business-card-is-crap

I wanted to share with you one of the best business videos I have ever seen on Youtube. Don’t let not having the tools be your trepidation! You don’t spend the money till you make the money!

Don’t let your business card let you down

Thoughts & summary on the video

  • Is your business card cheap?

  • Does it hold a crease?

  • Can you tear it? Absolutely!

If it looks like crap, it is crap!

Your business card should be so good that even if they don’t like you, they won’t throw it away, because it demonstrates incredible marketing capability

It’s true that people always keep hold of memorable business cards, I think it’s important to show something different about yourself or your company. If your in a room full of people and there are four other professionals from four similar companies, sharing four similar job titles, what makes you different from them?

Is it your personality? Your experience?

A business card can help you stand out from the crowd by saying more than just your job title and contact details. Your card shouldn’t say your just an online marketing manager who works for this agency.

It should tell you about the results you generate.

On a final note…

Life is not about being liked, it’s about being effective

I couldn’t agree more with this. Certainly when dealing with clients it isn’t always easy to come to the same conclusions, but I’m happy to put my honest opinion across and say “this needs improving”. Why because I want the campaign or design to be as effective as possible.

If I never made any recommendations to clients of how we can improve and did everything requested with out question I’d be liked sure, but would I be effective? The answer is no.

What you should get is a balance between the two, I deliver effective online marketing campaigns that deliver results and in return clients are happy.

Illiya – I’d agree that you need to differentiate yourself from peers in the same space – but I disagree that you need to put “results” on your business card. Typically when you give a business card out the only purpose is to facilitate communication & connections at a later date. It’s not necessarily to sell your background for you – that’s your job (what you say, how you say it, etc.). Your business card’s job is just to be memorable. Great thing that there’s more than one way to be memorable. Using folds like the guy in the video is an easy way, but the harder path is really thinking about what your brand is, and finding a way (there are thousands of possibilities) to communicate that point on a small piece of paper. In essence, I think that you should communicate originality & personality as opposed to experience highlights.
